Sheet Metal Bending - Various Processes Plus The Way It Operates

We are surrounded by items that are products of a method referred to as sheet metal bending. Most of us are not aware of what it is and how it operates. If you look at the things inside your houses, I bet at least a couple of them are bending finished products. If you step out and watch your surroundings, the buildings and places of residence that you pass also use the goods produced by this technique.

When we mention sheet metal bending, we basically refer to the process that transforms a sheet metal into a differently-shaped product. It could get the shape of a letter U, V or any other channel shape.

Bending is classified into three common varieties:

1. Coining

This is the best known sheet metal bending type employed by engineers and metalworkers. It takes a few materials like die and punch. It is often regarded as precision stamping because of the very comprehensive and mindful attitude you have to possess in order to make a finished product that is of high quality.

Coining, which is kind of cold working process, is employed in the manufacture of coins. These types of coins are small, but if you view carefully, you would see the excellent pictures and texts on them. Badges, medals and buttons are a few other articles created through this process.

2. Air bending

This is performed by allowing the punch and the workpiece touch but not very low as to crash into the bottom. Once you ease the punch, the workpiece ends up with not that much of a warped. This is due to a thing called spring-back, which is generally between 5 and 10 degrees.

3. Bottom bending

This specific type of sheet metal bending has certain similar properties with coining and air bending. In this method, the punch pushes the workpiece down till it touches the bottom of the die. This movement will create a little spring-back position.

There are several types of devices and equipment used when performing this operation. The most popular of them all include the machine presses, bending brakes, and brake presses. These equipment come in different shapes, sizes, and prices. Expect to see some of them to be equipped with the simplest features that are perfect for simple and basic sheet metal bending work. However, those that possess high-end, complicated and modern features are also available on the market to large industries and plants that require huge quantities of products manufactured in a certain time frame.
